The Namsan (Seoul) Tower: A majestic part of Seoul

Namsan, whose name means “South Mountain” in Korean, is located at the center of metropolitan Seoul. This modest peak rises to nearly 400 meters (around 1,600 feet) above the Han River valley and lies roughly 4 kilometers (about 2 miles) from the river itself.

Namsan, whose name means “South Mountain” in Korean, is located at the center of metropolitan Seoul. This modest peak rises to nearly 400 meters (around 1,600 feet) above the Han River valley and lies roughly 4 kilometers (about 2 miles) from the river itself.

Because much of Seoul has a comparatively level terrain, Namsan stands prominently above the surrounding city. From many locations throughout central Seoul, the mountain is easy to recognize.

The Tower Above the Mountain

At the summit stands an impressive radio and television tower that extends another 300 meters (approximately 900 feet) above the mountain. The structure is supported by an internal steel framework and enclosed by a circular concrete wall measuring about 50 meters across.

An elevator is located within the lower section of the tower, carrying workers and visitors upward to a five-story circular structure positioned at the top. The upper two floors contain an observation platform and a revolving restaurant.

Rising above the highest floor is a strong antenna mast that reaches nearly 200 meters (roughly 600 feet). Together, the mountain and tower create a landmark that stands close to 500 meters (around 1,500 feet) in total height.

A Landmark That Guides the Way Home

The tower is an imposing presence and a striking feature of Seoul’s skyline. For me, however, it has taken on an even more personal meaning. Over time, Namsan and its tower have become a familiar beacon, helping guide me back home.
